How to care for your Rhipsalis Heteroclada?
Light
Rhipsalis species are jungle cacti. Meaning that they won’t survive strong direct sunlight. They much more appreciate indirect light, as they would get in their natural habitat in the tropical areas of South- and Central America.
Water
As Rhipsalis are a type of cacti they are sensitive to overwatering. Once the top few centimeters of the soil are dried out it’s time to water your plant again. In the hot summer months this probably means watering once a week. In colder months watering very other week is probably more appropriate. An other good way to tell if your Rhipsalis Heteroclada is to look at its tendrils. Once they’re shriveling it means that the water storage has run out.
Soil
A light soil mixture is best to keep your Rhipsalis happy. You can use special cacti soil, which you can get at most garden centers. Alternatively you can mix some regular potting soil with some perlite and/or sand. For ultimate drainage you can even use some clay pebbles on the bottom of the pot to absorb to excess water.
Humidity
Rhipsalis Heteroclada will do perfectly fine in any regular house hold environment. To keep them in excellent condition however its advisable to keep the humidity at leas at 50%.
Fertilisation
In the growing season you can fertilize your Rhipsalis without a problem. You can either use a special fertilizer for cacti or use a general fertilizer for house plants. Which one you choose, always check the care instructions before using the product.
Repotting
The best time to repot is during the beginning of the growing season. When you repot your plant it’s best to use a new pot which is 20% bigger. This will give the roots some space to continue to grow. Repotting can be done once a year or every other year, depending on the size of the plant and its roots.
Toxicity
Rhipsalis are non-toxic to both human and animals.
